Our vPredict™ Optical Catheter System is being designed to rapidly analyze materials within arterial walls during a procedure we refer to as an Optiography™ Scan. Using advanced optical analysis techniques, our system is intended to detect and display the chemical composition of atherosclerotic plaques. According to a publication of the Armed Forces Institute for Pathology, “there is currently no method available, invasive or otherwise, that accurately pinpoints those plaques vulnerable to form thrombosis resulting in infarction.”1 A major problem continues to be “the lack of a reproducible, validated diagnostic technique” for vulnerable plaque.2 An effective detection solution would allow physicians to assess patient risk and enable the development and utilization of therapeutic interventions that can prevent future heart attacks.1 Our goal is to provide interventional cardiologists with the real-time critical information they currently lack regarding atherosclerotic plaque – its precise chemical composition. We believe this information will finally enable cardiologists to more accurately assess patient risk and, for the first time, treat the cause of heart attacks before they occur.
